Healthy Heart Philadelphia is a program conceptualized by Dr. Ngozi Onuoha as a tool to combat the leading cause of death of adults across the USA: Heart Disease.

Cardiovascular disease claims one life in the United States every 33 seconds. Every year, this illness costs the nation hundreds of billions of dollars in lost lives, medical expenses, and health care.

The reality is that heart disease starts as early as in the teenage years of our lives. The formation of blood vessel plaque buildup from poor diet and lifestyle along with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity, leads to heart disease. Our program, using evidence-based solutions, will improve eating habits in teens by educating them on nutritional practices such as including vegetables and fruits in their diets.

We can make an impact.

We can reduce the risks and rates of heart disease with health education. Healthy Heart Philadelphia will be partnering with local community schools, grocers, and health groups to organize and provide cooking classes for teens and their parents.

Earlier this year, The Economy League of Greater Philadelphia in partnership with Accelerate Health Equity and powered by Independence Blue Cross presented the Well City Challenge – a social impact competition that will engage and support everyday innovators with new creative ideas for addressing Philadelphia’s health and wellness challenges. Healthy Heart Philadelphia is a finalist!
