Some women between 40 and 60 years of age gain 1.5 pounds (0.7 kg) per year. This gradual weight gain can build up or accumulate to create obesity (defined as body mass index equal or more than 30).
Obesity is a risk factor for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular risk and other obesity-related conditions.
The WSPI has recommended counseling midlife women 40 to 60 years of age with normal or overweight body mass index (18.5–29.9 kg/m2). This counseling
is to help maintain weight or limit weight gain to prevent obesity.
Counseling may include individualized discussion of healthy eating and physical activity.
